Los Angeles (KABC)-Archbishop Carl Bean, a prominent Los Angeles gay activist and singer who influenced Lady Gaga’s song “Born This Way,” has died.

Founder of Bean, Unity Fellowship in Christchurch, Los Angeles, It was 77.

Bean was an icon of the LGBT + community, a proud gay man, and a Christian.

Ordained as a minister in 1982, Bean soon founded the church as a minister to welcome gay Christians.

The coat of arms of the church says, “God is love, and love is for all.”

As a pioneering AIDS activist, Bean founded the Minority AIDS Project in 1985. It is still in operation and is dedicated to helping low-income people at high risk and those living with HIV / AIDS.

Bean told his life story in the 2010 book “I was born this way: a journey of gay preachers through gospel music, disco stardom, and the ministry of Christ.”

Prior to becoming a preacher, Bean was a Motown disco star, as he states in the title. In 1975 he recorded the song “I was born this way”.

The song became an early gay anthem and eventually peaked at # 15 on the Billboard dance charts.

In May, Lady Gaga released the hit “Bone This Way,” inspired by Bean’s Motown hit, recorded 11 years before she was born.

“Thank you for decades of relentless love, courage, and why you sing,” Gaga tweeted. “So we deserve joy, and we all deserve joy, because we deserve the right to inspire tolerance, acceptance, and freedom for all.”

In 2019, the crossroads outside of Bean’s Flagship University Fellowship Church in Jefferson and Sycamore were renamed Archbishop Carl Bean Square.

The church says Bean died on Tuesday after a long illness.

The church has not yet announced when the worship will take place.
